Running Deer

Once upon a time, in a Native American tribe, there lived a young boy named Running Deer. Running Deer was a talented runner and a skilled hunter, but he was also very arrogant and thought he was better than everyone else in his tribe. He would often brag about his accomplishments and belittle others.

One day, while out hunting, Running Deer came across a wise old man who was sitting by a stream. The old man asked Running Deer what he was hunting for, and Running Deer replied, “I am hunting for the biggest deer in the forest, because I am the greatest hunter in the tribe.”

The old man smiled and said, “You may be a great hunter, but there is always someone greater than you. And if you continue to be arrogant and boastful, you will never learn anything new, and you will never truly be happy.”

Running Deer was offended by the old man’s words, but he couldn’t stop thinking about them. As he continued his hunt, he realized that he had been so focused on his own greatness that he had never really appreciated the beauty of the forest around him. He had never taken the time to truly learn from the animals he hunted or to appreciate the wisdom of his elders.

As the sun began to set, Running Deer came across a small deer that was limping. He could have easily killed the deer, but he remembered the old man’s words and decided to spare the animal’s life. Instead, he carefully helped the deer back to its family, who were grateful for his kindness.

From that day on, Running Deer began to appreciate the world around him more. He listened to the stories of his elders and learned from the animals he hunted. He realized that true greatness comes not from arrogance, but from humility and kindness.

The moral of the story is that no matter how talented or successful we may be, we should never forget to be humble and kind. There is always something new to learn and someone greater than us, and it is only by being open to these experiences that we can truly find happiness and fulfillment.
